Spray Booth Clearance Testing

What is Spray Booth Clearance Testing?

Spray Booth Clearance Testing is a procedure for ensuring the safety and functionality of a spray booth by checking its structure, the efficiency of the filters, the airflow rate and lighting levels.

There is a requirement from the HSE to measure and display the “clearance times” for spray booths, to ensure that exposure to isocyanate is reduced.

Isocyanate exposure is one of the most crucial safety risks to those working with spray booths – but due to its odourless, tasteless and colourless vapour, it can be difficult to identify. With continued exposure, the health damage can become severe and permanent – as there is no cure.

For many years, exposure to isocyanate has been the single biggest cause of occupational asthma within the UK.

Exposure to isocyanate is a very real danger for those working within the spray booth industry – which is why we test extensively for it during our comprehensive Spray Booth Clearance tests.

Risks associated with Isocyanate include:

– Severe asthma attacks
Continuously sore and irritated eyes
– Skin inflammation and rashes
– Chest tightness
– Persistent cough and breathlessness
– Flu-like shivers
– Gastrointestinal issues.

Preventing exposure to the chemical compound is crucial – which is why the HSE advises that the clearance tests should be carried out just before the filters in the spray booth are changed (to provide insight into the worst-case scenario).

It is also recommended that Spray Booth Clearance Testing should be included in the 14-month maintenance examination of the booth. However, more frequent testing may be required in some circumstances.

What does the law say?

The law is simple. There is a legal requirement from the HSE to measure and display “clearance times” for spray booths and rooms – in order to reduce accidental exposure to isocyanate. This is also mandated in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
