What are hazardous area inspections?

Due to the heightened risks associated with these areas, they are subject to more stringent electrical safety checks that standard non-hazardous areas. Our experienced field engineers can assist in ensuring you remain compliant in hazardous areas with our hazardous area services.

Regular ATEX inspections are vital to ensure equipment is fit for purpose and is compliant with regulations. There are three types of ATEX inspections used, which are required at different stages of the equipment life cycle: visual, close, and detailed.

Our compliance services cover the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations (DSEAR), Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR) and BS 7671 Electrical Inspection and Testing.

There are two main types of Hazardous Area Inspections, Initial Hazardous Inspections and Period Hazardous Inspections.

Initial Hazardous Inspections – A thorough examination of a location with potential explosion or fire risks due to flammable substances. The inspection aims to ensure safety by identifying risks, assessing severity, and classifying zones for appropriate safety measures.

Periodic Hazardous Inspections – These are regular checks on locations with potential explosion or fire risks to maintain safety. The purpose of these inspections is to identify new hazards that may have emerged since the last inspection. The interval between periodic inspections should not exceed three years.

Our engineers are trained to City & Guilds 2391 or 2394/2395 in electrical inspection testing and CompEx Ex01- Ex04

Hazardous Area Inspection FAQs
What happens in a Hazardous Area Inspection?

During a Hazardous Area Inspection, we’ll thoroughly examine your designated hazardous areas and the equipment you operate there. This includes collating a record of your equipment, inspecting the quality and condition of your machinery and equipment, identifying any potential risks and making well-considered recommendations.

Are Hazardous Area Inspections a legal requirement?

Yep. Hazardous Area Inspections are a legal requirement in the UK. Numerous pieces of legislation mandate these inspections to ensure the safety of workers and the public alike. All employees with designated Hazardous Areas must assess the risks of such areas, implement clear safety measures and ensure equipment is maintained safely and responsibly.

How often should I carry out Hazardous Area Inspections?

How long is a piece of string? The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to how often you should conduct a Hazardous Area Inspection. It’ll vary depending on the type of facility, the nature of hazardous materials, and how often the area is used. We advise a risk-based approach that considers the type of equipment you have and what it is being used for.

What sort of area is considered to be a ‘Hazardous Area?’

Hazardous areas are frequently found in a range of industries and locations - including, but not limited to, the oil and gas sector, chemical manufacturing facilities, breweries and distilleries, pharmaceutical plants, and paint shops equipped with spray booths, among plenty of others.
